They are the parotid glands.They are subject during the later yearsof childhood and youth to infection.This is called parotitis—in ordinarylanguage, mumps. For a few days before they becomeinfected and inflamed, the child will saycomplainingly many times a day, Ifeel so sick. He may be slightlyfeverish and inclined to vomit; if, afteran attack of vomiting, eating is at-tempted, he will complain of shoot-ing pain below the lobe of one ear.It is the pain which first calls attentionto a deep-seated swelling of the glandjust described. The swelling may beslight, or it may be so great as to extendto the face and neck, causing the headto be held stiffly or to be drawn towardthe affected side. When very large, it 92

Mumps. FOR THE DOCTOR gives a foolish expression to theface, making any one but the patientinclined to smile. He, however, is farfrom smiling, for the pain may be sogreat that he will be unable to chew orswallow. Both sides of the face are attacked,as a rule, though there is usually an in-termission of from three to seven daysbetween the development on the twosides. Mumps is a contagious disease,and a child must therefore be kept outof school until he is entirely well. Inordinary attacks the doctor need notbe sent for if the mother will keep thechild in bed for a day or two, andwithin the house until all swelling hasdisappeared. The bowels must be keptopen and liquid food only given,—milk,beaten eggs, and broths, for instance. In boys and girls who are develop-ing—i.e.j from the ages of 13 to 16— WHEN TO SEND an attack of mumps may be more trou-blesome, in boys the infection goingfrom the parotid glands to the testicles;in girls, from the glands to the breastsor the ovaries.
