Emile d' ene ricwereuse sol no d' famile:
- I have traced my Bricmont family back to Tilly in 1684. They lived in Tilly, Marbais, and Sart-Dames-Avelines, and then in 1800 two sons moved to Fleurus, and their descendants moved to Wangenies and Wanfercee-Baulet. Now probably most Bricmonts (and Bricmants) in the area north and east of Charleroi are my cousins.
- There were many different spellings of my family name between 1684 and 1900. The oldest is Bricman. The old names were: Bricqmont, Bricqman, Bricmant, Bricmon, and Briqman. The names of my family that survive today are Bricmont and Bricmant (the latter in the region near Marbais). I do not know if we are related to the old Bricmonts of 1317 and 1552. It is possible that our oldest ancestor was a Braekman from Flanders and his name was changed when he came to Wallonia. A male cousin has had genetic testing and his Y chromosome is Nordic, probably Viking.
- I am pleased to see that you and others are preserving the Walloon language.
- Thank you for these additional data.
- Actually, they do not show a link with the Famene village involved. BUT the area around Fleurus does not differentiate /ã/ (an) and /ɔ̃/ (on) (=> Bricmon = Bricman).
